Week of April 6

Monday, April 6

This morning we came in and I started to work on my blog a bit. We had a meeting a when Amy arrived at 9. We met up in Amy’s office and began discussion the upcoming Growing Together event. Melissa and I used the tentative map to create where all the stations for the event will go throughout the three different floors of the building. This event is for children who have a parental figure with cancer in partnership with Kesem. We created a to-do list of things we needed to do before as well, including purchasing breakfast, plates, getting tables and chairs, name tags, etc. Following this we had a social media discussion meeting. Melisaa gave Amy the run through of this month and and next months, as I finally wrapped up the ABC’s of cancer filler content. Proceeding this meeting, Melissa and I were tasked with calling families in regard to the Growing Together event. We each called three families inviting them to the event. We once again had group interviews after lunch, this was the last set of interviews. We debriefed this group to make final decisions and then I headed out for the day.

Wednesday, April 8

Goodmorning! Today was a great Wednesday! We started the morning off by blogging. Then Melissa and I came together to create a document that would ultimately help Amy and Molly after we left to keep track of social media. The posts contain all of the months June-December with the dates that should be posted, a link to the photos in a drive, and then the corresponding caption as well. Then we came upstairs and had some cheesecake and bundt cake that Amy had made, it was fantastic. Amy wanted us to redo the logos for their fall events Pickled Pink, a pickleball tournament and Kickin’ for a Cure, a kickball tournament. We did this for a while, then we headed down to the first floor conference room for a meeting on Growing Together, the social work family day event. This took a really long time and if I am being quite frank I did check out most of the meeting as other people were inputting on the event. Following this we had a separate meeting with just Charissa, the head of social work to go over more input alone. After this we headed out for a lunch break, we went to the new Cafe Racer and debriefed the social work meeting. Then we came back and ended up heading out for the day!

Thursday, April 9

This morning we met up at the volunteer check in because Molly is out of town. We went into Amy’s office following this to see if there was anything she needed specifically from us today. We got more Look Good Feel Better flyers printed to distribute and then booked the 3rd floor conference room so we could do a social media walk through. We showed Amy our system we started setting up yesterday, and ran through May’s content and captions as well as other future plans. Then I started to work on June and July cancer awareness captions. Following this I started writing all of the volunteers names on little spring decals so that we could decorate the area for volunteer appreciation month. This took a while since there were 150 of them and then we took an intermission for lunch and to chat. We had CFA bless the lord. Then we came to put them all over the walls, except Melissa did that all and now I am updating my blog. Weekly reflection matched with competencies

Week of April 6 to April 9

2.1.2 Facilitate collaborative efforts among priority populations, partners, and stakeholders

This week we all collaborated with social work to assist in their upcoming Growing Together event. This event is in partnership with Kesem. They host camps and events with the UGA chapter to help children in families who have been diagnosed with cancer. I helped map out stations across the floors and participated in the weekly meeting to discuss responsibilities and logistics.

2.3.4 Adopt, adapt, and/or develop tailored intervention(s) for priority population(s) to achieve desired outcomes

For the growing together event, Melissa and I did outreach calls to different families. I am unsure of how we got this information, but we were able to tell those that picked up about the event!

2.4.2 Develop materials needed for implementation

As always, I continued to develop social media content. This week we wrapped up and reviewed a lot of the ABCs of cancer. We helped re-design logos (that ultimately won’t be used) and distributed flyers for the upcoming Look Good Feel Better that takes place on the last day of my internship.

6.5.6 Use digital media to engage audience(s) (e.g., social media management tools and platforms)

6.3.3 Tailor message(s) for the audience(s)

This week we spent a lot of time creating captions. This is so important to have done before the end of the internship so that Molly and Amy have a really smooth time posting content. Our social media engagement has skyrocketed and we want to keep the efforts up. Working on June and July captions is a must. In addition to this, we created a really effective system for Molly and Amy to use while we are gone. The system includes the date of the post, the post itself, and associated caption

7.3.7 Facilitate the engagement and retention of staff and volunteers

We planned and assisted in efforts to personalize the decorations and board for April and volunteer appreciation week later this month. We conducted our last interviews and sent out acceptances to those volunteers!

Reflection:

This week we did a lot more behind the scenes work than our normal event initiatives. As much as I love the events, ultimately I appreciated the time and space to work on content, logos, etc. that will ultimately help Amy and Molly in the long run- not just temporarily. Outreach for Growing Together made me really nervous, but I was able to maintain professionalism and was really proud of myself for overcoming that fear. I was sad to have wrapped up the volunteer onboarding. I loved being on the opposite side of an interview and think it is so fun to meet new people. I am proud of the system Melissa and I created and the collaboration we have done all semester so far.
