Monday March, 2 2026

This morning we started off in the volunteer area to welcome all the volunteers and make sure they were where they are supposed to be and if they need anything since Molly is out of town. We worked on social media until Amy came up. As soon as she did she sent us on a full day excursion. Melissa and I were tasked to go around town and hand out Strollin’ flyers. We had 20 different locations! We went to 14 before lunch and Mleissa left. Then following lunch, a little pow-wow, and the printing of more flyers, I headed out to the remaining destination.

Thursday, March 5 2026

Today we started off by working on our blogs! We chilled down in Molly’s office before Molly called me to go up to the volunteer bulletin board. She wanted me to re-do it for March. She showed me her inspo and I got to work. At 10 we met in the 3rd floor conference room to go over social media stuff because we never did on Monday. Melissa led the conversation on stuff we already created and needed approval of. I mentioned that I didn’t think that we had a brand established. I understand that we have a lot going on and cancer colors are all different, but we need some cohesion. Amy got me started working on that so after lunch I picked a template for all of our awareness days, world health days, recognition templates, and other repetitive templates.

Friday, March 6

Happy Friday!! Today I was Dress in Blue Day in Elberton. We got to the office around 8 and started packing up some UCBC Cares decorum and the inflatable colon to bring to the event. We drove over and arrived around 10ish. Event setup didn’t start closer til 11 so we stayed in the car and chatted a bit. Amy pulled the car around to the center of town where we got out and set up the inflatable colon and a table. Dress in Blue Day is an event that Pam Allen created to raise awareness for colorectal cancer. She was fabulous. There were a bunch of tables, a speaker station, and two other organizations with booths. Ours had a lot of colorectal cancer resources and then fun merch. We went with Amy, Molly, Lindsay, Kristin, and Dr.Yi all well established in the gastro community. I actually spoke at this event to the crowd which was so fun! I spoke on gut friendly foods and the association to foods with colon cancer risk increases.

The event was about 2 hours long, we talked to a lot of people after and promoted Strollin’ for the Colon a bit. We took down our station and then went to lunch to have another Strollin’ for the Colon meeting. We discussed updates and then headed back to the office.

Week of 3/2- 3/9 Matched with Competencies and Reflection

2.1.2 Facilitate collaborative efforts among priority populations, partners, and stakeholders.

This week we all worked closely together to coordinate outreach for Strollin’ for the Colon because it was coming up after Melissa and I got back from spring break. We discussed content approval and collaborated with community members during Dress in Blue Day in Elberton.

2.4.2 Develop materials needed for implementation.

Distributed promotional flyers for both Strollin’ for the Colon and Stick it to Cancer to 20 different community outreach locations. I helped redesign the volunteer bulletin board for March for Molly. We curated templates for awareness posts to increase cohesion efforts for social media.

3.2.4 Deliver health education and promotion as designed.

At the Dress in Blue Day event in Elberton I gave a speech to attendees. I spoke about gut health and the relationship diet has on colorectal cancer risk. I engaged with community members at the booth we had set up to promote awareness and distribute educational materials.

6.4.3 Develop communication aids, materials, or tools using appropriate multimedia (e.g., infographics, presentation software, brochures, and posters).

6.5.6 Use digital media to engage audience(s) (e.g., social media management tools and platforms).

Again, I created templates for awareness days, recognition posts, and recurring content to aid in cohesion. Printed out materials for flyers and bulletin boards.

7.2.3 Demonstrate leadership through independent initiative and problem-solving.

I completed a large-scale outreach project for Strollin’ for the Colon. Here I identified and addressed some branding inconsistencies and maybe what direction we should head toward.

Overall weekly reflection

This week I reached a new level of independence and trust from Molly and Amy I believe. I outreached all day for the foundation across several different communities. They also let me speak at a public community cancer awareness event. These showed responsibility and increased my confidence. The more I continue to work with the foundation the more I can recognize gaps and work towards solutions. Speaking in public at the event was the first time I have combined my health promotion, interning, and medical assistant knowledge all in one and it was great!
