Summary of Week 2 Matched with Competencies
- 2.1.1: Convene priority populations, partners, and stakeholders
- 2.1.3: Establish the rationale for the intervention
- 2.3.4: Adopt, adapt, and/or develop tailored intervention(s) for priority population(s) to achieve desired outcomes
Summary: During this week I attended my first UCBC Cares internship meeting. The meeting was focused on planning upcoming events, specifically Strollin’ with the Colon and Worries and Wonders. This meeting collaborated with both Amy and Molly. I had been out of town for MLK Jr. weekend so I unfortunately did not contribute as much as I had wished for, but that was what the rest of the week was for. In this meeting we discussed existing content, made edits, and established the next necessary steps. In addition to this I attended my first partner meeting. I was with Charissa, one of our social workers, and Blaine, as well as Amy, as we discussed Worries and Wonders. This event is designed to support the children of family patients undergoing cancer treatment. Both of these meetings allowed me to observe the stakeholder position.
- 3.1.2: Arrange for implementation services
- 3.2.4: Deliver health education and promotion as designed
Summary: Throughout the week I continued to assist in organizing spreadsheets, preparing event materials and donations necessary for our upcoming events. I picked up several gift cards for the upcoming Breast Friends Brunch giveaways and dropped them off at our local office. In addition, I helped to prepare surveys and metrics, following prior events like our oncology foot massages. These tasks allowed me to create feedback tools and ensure that communication between the organization and outside resources
- 6.3.3: Tailor message(s) for the audience(s)
- 6.4.3: Develop communication aids, materials, or tools using appropriate multimedia
- 6.5.6: Use digital media to engage audience(s
Summary: The biggest contribution to my internship I assume I will provide is developing communication between social media and UCBC Cares. So even though I was gone for the long weekend, even just one day was long enough to catch up on the website content, social media, and email content. I spent the week drafting website content, event expectations, and goals. I continued to use patient testimonies and expectations to create engaging instagram and facebook content to promote the program. These strengthened my ability to create content while maintaining professionalism.
- 7.1.1: Identify potential partners and stakeholders
- 7.3.7: Facilitate the engagement and retention of staff and volunteers
Summary: This week I had to interact a lot, specifically on Friday with the volunteers. I had to assist in shift changes and support while Amy and Molly were offsite. I gained insight on how UCBC Cares maintains and has built their strong volunteer program that has quadrupled in two years. These interactions help me understand the importance of relationships surrounding the health promotion initiatives.
Reflection of Week 2:
After reflecting on my second week, I feel a stronger sense of confidence and responsibility. Coming back from the long weekend made me slightly uncomfortable, but forced me to be pushed out of my comfort zone and work hard to ensure I knew what was going on around me. It was required of me to catch up and allowed me to immerse myself in deeper planning and collaboration.
One of the most intentional parts of this week was observing the planning and communca=tion between stakeholders at the Worries and Wonders meeting. In addition, being trusted to work independently and supportive with the volunteers reinforced my confidence in what I was doing in the internship. Overall, this week helped me solidify my communication and organization to contribute to UCBC Cares.
