Today I began my internship at University Cancer and Blood Center with the UCBC Cares Foundation. UCBC Cares is a nonprofit with the goal of increasing wellness across patients and community. Guiding principles of the foundation include education, support, prevention, and volunteerism. My fellow classmate Melissa is also an intern with UCBC Cares, which makes the job even more exciting. In the morning, before we kick started the day we were tasked with handing out goodie bags to our female patients that included lip balm, hand cream, and face cream. Once we settled in, we got a grand tour of the building. The building is absolutely beautiful, but also a huge maze that might take some getting used to- this took a majority of the day. We then began to go over expectations, schedules, and our upcoming events. We took a break for lunch and hoped back into it. Something I have noticed is the amount of people that my preceptor interacts with and the relationships she maintains that all benefit the foundation. Following Melissa’s departure, we took a trip to the breast health building up the road. This is where a lot of the UCBC Cares storage/merchandise is. I got familiar with where everything was here in case I was asked and also was able to look at some of the goodies for our first event- Look Good Feel Great. I ended the day meeting with Amy (my preceptor) and Molly (volunteer coordinator) to talk more about next steps and how their system has evolved since becoming a nonprofit just two years prior.
